Being Really Awkward Is My Superpower

For no particular reason, I thought I’d tell you how much I dislike it when I’m at a group activity, and we are asked to partner up.

There are always those cool, confident people who turn to the person next to them, and nod their heads like, Shall we dance? Then they connect, chat, laugh, and move on like soulmates effortlessly completing whatever task we're all supposed to do.

And then there’s me, the girl who spends a few too many seconds staring straight ahead, trying to summon a receptive vibe from anyone in the room.

By the time I rouse enough courage to catch someone’s eye, I feel like everyone else has already made a new BFF, traded phone numbers, and have plans to hang out and drink wine together on Thursday.

Meanwhile, my partner and I awkwardly look at each other, making that emoji face with a perfectly flat mouth, saying things like “Uhhhhh...so.”

Sometimes, my brain is perpetually stuck in third grade, replaying a loop of the time I was the last one chosen for the kickball team, and gosh, that’s annoying.
