October 31 Was A Very Good Day

Those of you with grandkids know how moments come along that are almost perfect. You have this glorious sense of reliving some of the best memories from your childhood. It’s like the universe sent you through a time warp because wasn’t it just yesterday you were taking your kids trick-or-treating, and now you’re the grandparent (How did you get so old so fast!), and you had no idea grandparenting could be this amazing.

That’s how I felt hanging out with the family last night, watching Ainsley in her mermaid princess costume toddling around with her friend - two little people who walked up to the doors, smiling and blaring, “TWICK OR TWEET!” as soon as someone appeared and handed them candy. Then their little helium-sounding voices squeaked out, “Thank You.”

Almost three years old has to be the perfect age for Trick-or-Treating…I mean, TWICK or TWEETING…but I might say that again when she is almost four years old next year.

Ainsley appreciated and loved every Dollar Store trinket in her gift bag from Pappy and The Lady, and she found joy in receiving candy that she still isn’t old enough to eat, things like gummy bears, gummy worms, and Jolly Ranchers, but that’s okay. The Lady was there to help out by eating the choak-able treats while Pappy tried to steal a full-sized Snickers bar out of her Pumpkin candy bucket when he thought no one was looking.

With the exception of the ridiculous traffic we sat in trying to get to Justin’s house (a 25-minute drive turned into an hour) and the end-of-the-evening scream of “GO AGAIN! GO AGAIN! GO AGAIN! GO AGAIN!!” because the first time trick-or-treating was so awesome, it was a fun day from beginning to end.

That was Halloween, and this is our wonderful life.
